Second-Half Surge Comes Up Short as #16 JMU Falls 5-2 at #7 Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Despite a strong second-half attacking effort, No. 16 James Madison field hockey could not overcome an early deficit, falling 5-2 at No. 7 Delaware on Sunday afternoon.

The Dukes (8-4, 1-1 CAA) trailed 4-0 heading into the second half before junior Corey Mayer got them on the board. They outshot the Blue Hens (9-3, 2-0 CAA) 9-8 in the second frame, though trailed 23-11 overall in shot attempts.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Delaware scored the first four goals of the game, including a penalty stroke in the 14th minute of play.
UD finished the contest with 17 shots-on-goal.
Junior Corey Mayer got the Dukes on the board with a sliding shot into the corner off a cross-circle pass from Melanie Kusakavitch 5:10 into the second half.
Kusakavitch cleaned up a four-shot corner attempt in the 57th minute, firing it in high off a rebound.
Goalkeeper Kyler Zampiello made a career-high 11 saves, the most by a single goalie in Christy Morgan's second stint as head coach.

MAYER'S MAKES
Junior Corey Mayer has scored five goals in the last three games, more than doubling her career total (7). For the season, her five goals ranks third on the team, behind sophomore Lisa Lejeune (6) and junior Miranda Rigg (9).

KUSAKAVITCH BREAKS FREE
Senior Melanie Kusakavitch has scored two goals in two games after going five games without a score. She led with the Dukes against Delaware with three points.
