COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Holding opponents to just three hits over 14.0 innings, No. 12/13 James Madison shut out Binghamton 6-0 and Buffalo 3-0 inside the Maryland Softball Stadium to open the Maryland Invite on Saturday.
The Dukes notched their eighth straight victory to improve to 23-3 after dominating performances in the circle by junior Megan Good and freshman Odicci Alexander.
Good (15-0) earned the start against Binghamton (3-9) as the right-handed no-hit the Bearcats over 6.1 innings. Binghamton's lone hit was a one-out double in the top of the seventh. Good fanned a season-high 14 batters in her 10th shutout of the season, tying JMU's single-season shutout record.
Not to be outdone, Alexander only allowed two hits and a walk against Buffalo (3-17). The right-hander struck out seven to improve to 7-3 after her fourth shutout of the season.
Freshman Madison Naujokas led JMU at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs score over Saturday's doubleheader. Junior first baseman Morgan Tolle also notched three hits while scoring a couple runs. Good only tallied two hits over Saturday's slate but capitalized with runners in scoring position to drive home five runs.
Opening Saturday by trading two scoreless innings with the Bearcats, the Dukes used an infield single to short off the bat of Naujokas, a walk from Tolle and a couple sacrifice bunts to move two runners into scoring position. Facing two outs, Good answered with her third home run of the season to break the stalemate giving JMU a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior third baseman Madyson Moran homered for the third consecutive game with a deep ball to center field, scoring senior shortstop Niki Prince, who reached on a walk.
The Dukes loaded the bases after a double by Naujokas, a walk from freshman catcher Kierstin Roadcap and a single through the left side from Tolle. Sophomore pinch hitter Jenny Behan plated the final run as Naujokas scored on Behan's fielder's choice to third base.
After allowing a hit by pitch in the top of the third, Good retired 12 consecutive batters before allowing a one-out double to left in the top of the seventh, the lone hit for the Bearcats.
The Dukes were kept off the board until the fourth inning in a tight contest against Buffalo. After senior right fielder Taylor Newton drew a leadoff walk and swiped second base, Moran singled up the middle to bring her home to give JMU a 1-0 advantage.
Freshman pinch hitter Natalie Cutright led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the right side before Tolle doubled to right field. The Bulls were able to keep a run from scoring after a play at home on freshman left fielder Cambry Arnold's fielder's choice, but Good gave JMU some breathing room with a two-RBI single through the left side to plate the final runs of the game.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"Our pitchers did a good job. Our defense played very well. Individually, we have some players that need to figure out their at bats while they are up at the plate. Once they have figured that out, then we will see how good we can be. Until then, who knows?"
GOOD TIES SINGLE-SEASON RECORD
In just her 15th start to her junior season, Megan Good has tied JMU's single-season record with her 10 shutout of 2017. Good set the record over her sophomore campaign as she tallied 10 shutouts during 2016. She has tallied 26 career shutouts as a Duke which second to only Jailyn Ford's 31. With two combined shutouts under her belt this season, Good holds the career record with 10.
