Good Sets Single-Season Record in 8-0 Shutout over Maryland
3/19/2017 8:50:00 PM | Softball
Good improved to 16-0 on the season with her 11th shutout to set a new single-season record for the Dukes. The right-hander scatted six hits and a walk to leave eight Terrapins (6-20-1) stranded. She struck out five in the contest.
Junior first baseman Morgan Tolle tied JMU's single-game record with four hits against the Terps. Tolle wen 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Senior shortstop Niki Prince tallied two hits, including a three-run home run. Good picked up two hits and two RBIs at the plate.
The Dukes opened the scoring in the top of the first after putting runners on the corners with Tolle's first triple of the season and an infield single from freshman left fielder Cambry Arnold. Good helped herself with an infield single just out of Maryland's starting pitcher Madison Martin's reach to score Tolle and give JMU a 1-0 lead.
Freshman designated player Odicci Alexander pushed the JMU lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to left field to score Arnold. A couple of walks, including a bases-loaded walk issued to freshman second baseman Madison Naujokas, plated a third first-inning run for JMU.
Tolle led off the second inning with a double to center before moving to third on Arnold's ground out to the pitcher. Good picked up a second RBI with a sacrifice fly to left to extend JMU's lead to 4-0.
The Terps had a scoring chance in the bottom of the second, but a clutch defensive play to tag the lead runner out at home on a fielder's choice and a baes-loaded strikeout from Good helped retire the side and preserve the shutout.
Prince pushed the JMU lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run, her third homer of the season, to score Good and Newton, who reached on a bunt single and a Terp error, respectively.
JMU added the final run of the game in the top of the seventh after a pinch-hit double from Jessica Mrozek.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"We did a nice job, especially with the wind, cold weather and the long wait. We had a long wait before we played, and we had a long wait with the lights going out. I thought our players handled that well, so I was proud of them."
TWEET OF THE GAME

SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR GOOD
With her 11th shutout of her junior season, Megan Good set a new single-season record for the Dukes. Good held the previous record of 10 shutouts over a single season, which she set during 2016. She now has a total of 27 career shutouts, the second-most in school history. Jailyn Ford holds the record with 31.
TOLLE'S RECORD NIGHT
A home run shy of hitting for the cycle, Morgan Tolle had a banner night at the plate with four hits to tie JMU's single-game record. Tolle is the 19th Duke to record four hits in a single game, and the first since Megan Good tallied four at Elon on April 30, 2016. This is the second time Tolle has knocked four hits in a single game. She first accomplished the feat against Minnesota on February 27, 2015.
