No. 11 JMU Splits Saturday Doubleheader against College of Charleston
4/1/2017 9:30:00 PM | Softball
Slugging five home runs, the Dukes (29-5, 3-2 CAA) run-ruled Charleston 16-6 through five innings to open the series and tie JMU's single-game home run record. The Cougars (20-14, 3-2 CAA) answered in game two of Saturday's doubleheader holding the Dukes to four hits in a 6-1 victory to even the series.
Junior pitcher Megan Good led JMU at the plate going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs over Saturday's slate. Freshman pitcher Odicci Alexander notched two hits and scored three runs while junior infielder Morgan Tolle added two hits and two runs to improve her hit streak to 13 consecutive games.
Good earned the victory over the Cougars to improve to 20-1 in the circle. The right-hander tossed four innings allowing three runs off four hits and a walk while striking out three. Alexander suffered the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season as she allowed four runs off three hits and three walks while striking out three.
Redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe and sophomore Jackie Tremain both made relief appearances for JMU over Saturday's games. Tremain, in her season debut, pitched three innings of scoreless softball and allowed just two hits while striking out two.
There was no shortage of offense for the Dukes in the series opener. JMU jumped on the Cougars early in the first inning. After a Tolle single, a Charleston throwing error on a bunt from freshman outfielder Cambry Arnold put runners on the corners with no outs. Good helped her own cause with an RBI single to left field before a Cougar error on a stolen base attempt allowed two runs to score to put JMU up 3-0.
Charleston responded in the top of the second with a three-run home run, but the Dukes loaded the bases with one out in the home half of the inning after three walks. Pinch hitter freshman Natalie Cutright singled up the middle to plate two runs to push JMU's lead to 5-3 before back-to-back home runs from Good and senior outfielder Taylor Newton made it a 9-3 game.
Freshman infielder Madison Naujokas plated the eighth run of the inning, the most runs scored by the Dukes in a single inning this season, with a single through the right side to put the Dukes up 11-3 after two.
Good's solo home run in the bottom of the third extended JMU's lead to 12-3. After Alexander led off the bottom of the fourth with a hit by pitch, senior infielder Niki Prince homered to push the lead to 14-3. Freshman Kate Gordon added two runs in a pinch hit appearance after slugging her first career home run to put JMU up 16-3 after four.
Charleston added three runs in the top of the fifth with three-run home run from Jordin Jones, but the comeback fell short as the Dukes notched a 16-6 victory.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Charleston got on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run. The Cougars added three runs off three hits and three walks in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead over the Dukes.
JMU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth after a RBI single from senior infielder Madyson Moran, but the Cougars answered in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run to take a 6-1 lead they would never relinquish.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"We have to bounce back. We have no choice there. Our response in that second game was not what you would expect from a junior and senior laden team. That's where the disappointment is. We knew what their pitchers were going to do in the first game, and we knew what their pitchers were going to do in the second game. We had some issues with our hitters and their at bats. Our pitchers have to want to be better. That's what it comes down to."

TOLLE KEEPS STREAKING
With hits in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, Morgan Tolle extended her hit streak to 13 consecutive games, the longest streak by any Duke this season. The infielder has also reached base safely in a season-best 20 consecutive contests.
GOOD NEARING PROGRAM RECORD
With today's series-opening victory, Megan Good brought her career record to 81-7. She is now just one win away from tying JMU great Jailyn Ford for the program's career record for victories in the circle.
