The Morrison Bruce Center and JMU Golf student-athletes teamed up to put on the 2017 Movin' and Groovin' Day for girls in the Harrisonburg community at Godwin Hall on Saturday, April 1 with a focus on healthy lifestyles. There were eight stations during the six-hour program with focuses on cardiovascular health, flexibility and yoga, muscular strength, positive self-talk, dance, nutrition, and golf skills.
The theme of the total wellness event was "Survivor: Daring, Dependable, Driven" and had groups of different ages travel together to each station. There were JMU Kinesiology students who also volunteered, guiding each group and leading particular stations. Kimmy Ewen, one of the student staff members at the Morrison Bruce Center, said, "This event is to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles in females seven to seventeen years old in the community."
Ewen commented on the dynamic between the students and the girls participating. "It's really cool to see JMU students and athletes working with the children because the children get so excited to be with college-aged students and to learn from them but then the college students are excited to pass on their knowledge and help out the younger generation."
The JMU Golf team led two golf stations, Starting New at Golf (SNAG) and Full-Swing Golf Skills where each participant learned from the student-athletes and practiced swinging with different clubs. Junior
Matt Cowgill enjoyed his time volunteering, saying, "It was a blast teaching the girls the game and helping learn how to hit the ball. It's cool to pass some of the knowledge I have gained on to them, hopefully some of them found a new hobby and possible passion."
Some of the Kinesiology students noted, "They (the girls) are still developing and moving and that's the fun part to see. They've really opened up a lot and this experience is really rewarding." The Morrison Bruce Center is a section of the Kinesiology department at JMU and is dedicated to enhancing the lives of girls and women.
