QUICK HITS
- James Madison will finally open Colonial Athletic Association play for the 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon, when the Dukes welcome the league's preseason favorite in Hofstra to the Convocation Center for a 4 p.m. bout.
- The Dukes capped off non-conference play with a 7-4 record, capped by a 75-69 win at Fordham on Dec. 20 that saw junior guard Matt Lewis rack up 22 points as JMU held on after a dominant first half at Rose Hill Gym. Sophomore guard Deshon Parker added 12 points and seven assists in one of his best performances of the season.
- Heading into the Dukes' first CAA matchup, Lewis leads the offensive charge with 17.7 points per game, while junior Darius Banks is adding 13.8 points per contest and junior Dwight Wilson is averaging a double-double at 10.1 points and 10.3 boards.
- Lewis also enters conference play as the only CAA player to rank in the league's top five for all three of points per game, rebounds per game (7.1) and assists per game (4.9) He also leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at exactly 2.0.
- The Dukes were tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason poll of the league's coaches and media members, earning three first-place votes along the way in one of the closest preseason polls in league history.
- Heading into the season, JMU welcomed a six-member freshman class, including forward Michael Christmas, Dalton Jefferson and Julien Wooden, as well as guards Zyon Dobbs, Jayvis Harvey and Quinn Richey.
SCOUTING THE PRIDE
- Hofstra was tabbed to win the CAA in the 2019-20 Preseason Poll and has won five of its last six entering league play, moving to 9-4 on the season - including three wins on opposing courts. The Pride closed non-conference play a 63-51 win over Manhattan.
- Senior Preseason All-CAA selections Eli Pemberton and Desure Buie pace the Pride thus far in 2019-20, with Pemberton racking up 17.1 points and 6.0 boards per game, while Buie adds 16.6 points and nearly three steals per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
- Saturday afternoon's CAA opener will mark the 34th meeting between the two schools, with all 33 past encounters coming since the Pride joined the Colonial for the 2001-02 season. Hofstra holds a 20-13 edge in the all-time series, in large part due to a 12-game Hofstra winning streak from the 2003-04 season through the 2010-11 campaign.
- Last year, the two programs each won on the other team's home court during the regular season - Hofstra won 85-68 in Harrisonburg, while the Dukes won 104-99 in Hempstead - before the top-seeded Pride took down JMU in a 76-67 win in the CAA Quarterfinals.
- In that matchup in North Charleston, then-sophomores Matt Lewis and Darius Banks led the way, with Lewis racking up 23 points - including the 1,000th of his career - while Banks tallied 15 points and 12 boards in his third career double-double.
