WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNCW broke a scoreless tie with a golden goal in the 108th minute on Saturday night, handing James Madison a hard-fought 1-0 loss in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
UNCW picked up the winner deep into the second overtime period, pushing the ball up the left wing before carving a low pass across the box to forward Jalen Anderson, who was able to fire home the winner.
The Dukes (10-3, 4-1 CAA) dominated the opening period, taking a 7-3 shot advantage and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks into halftime, but could not find the go-ahead and UNCW (8-4-1, 3-2 CAA) pushed back, outshooting JMU by a 10-4 mark the rest of the way.
Redshirt freshman Axel Ahlander and redshirt sophomore Clay Obara each picked up three shots on the evening, while goalkeeper Martin Leu posted four saves.
UNCW goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta tallied four saves in the win, while forward Jacob Evans led the Seahawks with four shots.
QUOTING COACH ZAZENSKI
"Tonight we didn't have the energy or intensity needed to win and we were not at our best. We created some quality chances but our performance was sloppy overall. UNCW is always a top side and congrats to them on the night."
