HARRISONBURG, Va. — Redshirt senior
Ebony Wiseman and graduate student Aïmy Diop both scored in the first half for James Madison to lead the Dukes to a 2-0 win over Elon on Thursday night at Sentara Park to clinch a berth in the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
JMU moves to 8-8-1 overall and 5-3 in league play, while Elon drops to 8-6-2, 3-3-2 CAA.
The Dukes dominated play in the first half and controlled the tempo throughout the first 45 minutes. They were able to get on the board first in the 16th minute when a ball landed at the feet of
Lexi Vanderlinden, who sent a short pass to Wiseman to fire in the shot on the first touch. The goal was Wiseman's fourth of the season.
The offense of JMU continued to create chances during the remainder of the half and broke through once again in the 44th minute. A deflected cross found its self in front of
Caley Zack and Phoenix defenders, but she found the touch to get the ball to Diop. Diop then sent a bouncing shot on goal that was able to get around the diving Elon goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Dukes had a 9-3 advantage on shots in the first half, and ultimately outshot the Phoenix 11-7, with seven of their shots on goal. JMU continued to control the tempo in the second half, rarely allowing Elon to hold possessions for long periods of time.
Goalkeeper
Alexandra Blom played well for the Dukes, posting back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season on the way to her fifth overall shutout.
Game Notes
Quoting Head Coach Joshua Walters, Sr.
"What a great game tonight by the entire group. We were electric on the bench and showed our quality on the field. Qualifying for the CAA Tournament was a goal of ours and it is nice to check that one off, but we aren't finished. We will celebrate our seniors on Sunday against a good Delaware team, and then set our sights on how to attack the conference tournament."
