Dukes Drop Middle Game of Series to VMI

Redshirt junior Nick Stewart started for the Dukes, going two and two-thirds innings and striking out on shy of his season-high of six. Classmate Conor Hartigan lead the Dukes offensively, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, a double, and three RBI's.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dukes opened the scoring up with a Carson Bell home run in the first inning, his first career home run. VMI answered an inning later, tying the game at one on an RBI double that followed a bunt single. The Keydets would push four more runs across in the third to increase their lead to 5-1.
JMU got two runs back in the top of the fifth when Michael Morgan singled in Dallas Jackson, and then Conor Hartigan scored on a wild pitch the next batter after being moved to third on the single to make it 5-3. The Keydets responded by scoring eight runs in the fifth, pushing the score to 13-3. The Dukes cut back into the lead once again, making the score 13-6 after a VMI fielding error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for Hartigan who hit a bases clearing double. VMI added another run in their half of the sixth for a 14-6 home advantage.
JMU pushed a seventh run across in the seventh on a Josh Maguire RBI single, but VMI scored three runs in the home half of the seventh to keep the lead for good at 17-7.
GAME NOTES
- The Dukes hit .308 (4-13) with two outs.
- Hartigan tied a career-high with his three hits on the afternoon.
- Morgan pushed his hit streak to six games.
UP NEXT
The Dukes will play the rubber game tomorrow, March 14 with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Gray-Minor Stadium.
