HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball collected their first home win of the season with a 13-7 win over Norfolk State at Veterans Memorial Park Thursday evening.

The Dukes improved to 5-9 on the season while the Spartans fell to 10-10.

JMU started off strong in the first inning with a pair of RBIs from Lauren Bernett and Kayla Boseman. Bernett followed it up by stealing home and Isabelle Fishman finished the inning with a double to left field to send Boseman home.

NSU responded with runs in the second and third inning, making the score 4-2. The Dukes then used a four-run inning in the bottom of the third to create distance from the Spartans once again. Boseman started things off with her third home run of the season before Fishman hit a single up the middle to help Emily Phillips find the plate. Fishman then ran home following a fielding error by Norfolk State. Hallie Hall capped off the end of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Abbie Campbell.

The Spartans came back with a four-run inning of their own, starting off with a home run to left field in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Fishman hit a two-run homer to notch her first career home run and put JMU up 8-6.

The Dukes sealed their win in the sixth inning when an RBI double from Phillips sent Boseman and Reed Butler home. Phillips stole home to tally the final run of the game for the Dukes. NSU scored one run in the seventh, but were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Dukes will host the LD&B Insurance JMU Classic this weekend, taking on Lehigh (3 p.m.) and Maryland (5:30 p.m.) on Friday, Mar. 11 and Arkansas (11 a.m.) and Maryland (1:30 p.m.) on Sunday, Mar. 13. All games will be streamed on Flo Softball will be available to listen to on the Varsity App.
