Dukes Split Pair of Games at Home

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball split a pair of games on Friday at the LD&B Insurance JMU Classic, beating Lehigh 10-2 to open the day and falling to Maryland 12-5 in the evening at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday.

The Dukes moved to 6-10, the Terrapins improved to 10-11, while the Mountain Hawks fell to 3-9.

Hannah Shifflett led the Dukes at the plate with a total of four hits, highlighted by a home run against Lehigh.

GAME 1: Lehigh 2, JMU 10
Lehigh got on the board first in the top of the second, but Isabelle Fishman responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to even out the score.

The Mountain Hawks took the lead once again in the top of the third with a homer to left field, tallying their final run of the game. Hallie Hall followed up with a home run herself, bringing Shifflett in with her to take back the lead in the bottom of the third.

The Dukes went on a spree in the bottom of the fourth for four more runs. Emily Phillips started it off with her third home run of the season, later followed by a triple from Jasmine Hall that sent Fishman home. Lauren Bernett then hit a sacrifice fly to send Hall home before Shifflett rounded the inning out with a home run.

The Dukes sealed the win in the fifth, when Phillips hit an RBI single to drive in Kylie Thress. J. Hall brought in the final two runs with an RBI double, ending the game by run rule.

Meredith Wells started in the circle for the first time in her career, pitching the entire game and only walking four batters.

GAME 2: Maryland 12, JMU 5
Maryland took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, then increased it in the second with two more runs.Â

H. Hall was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single through the left side, spurring J. Hall to find the plate. The Terps tallied another run in the top of the fifth, and another RBI from H. Hall brought the score to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning.Â

Maryland scored another three runs in the top of the third, but a homer to right center from Bernett gave the Dukes two more runs of their own.

An RBI double from the Terps sealed their win in the top of the seventh, and the Dukes were only able to plate one run in the bottom half.
Â
The Dukes saw four pitchers take the circle, with Wells only allowing one earned run over 3.1 innings.
UP NEXT
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the remainder of the weekend's games have now been canceled. The Dukes will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16 at Radford.
