Dukes Split on Day Two at Liberty Softball Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison went 1-1 on day two at the Liberty Softball Invitational, falling 9-1 to Rutgers before coming back with a 3-0 victory against Lehigh on Saturday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.

The Dukes moved to 4-7 on the season. The Scarlet Knights improved to 12-6 with their win over JMU, while the Mountain Hawks dropped to 3-5.

Over the two games, Hallie Hall led the Dukes with a pair of hits, including a solo home run in game one and a double in game two. Kayla Boseman also hit a crucial homer in JMU's game-two win, while Emily Phillips also provided an RBI hit.

GAME 1 – Rutgers 9, JMU 1
Rutgers limited JMU to just one hit while scoring eight of its nine runs over the final three frames to down the Dukes 9-1 in six innings.

After RU took a 1-0 lead in the second, it extended the advantage to 3-0 with a pair of scores in the fourth.

JMU got on the board in the fifth with Hall's first home run of the season over the left field wall, but the Scarlet Knights responded with two more in bottom half. Rutgers added four in the sixth to make it an eight-run lead to end the game.

Alexis Bermudez went 4.1 innings for JMU, allowing four earned runs and seven hits with three strikeouts. Taylor Hankins pitched 1.1 innings of relief, striking out another RU batter.

GAME 2 – JMU 3, Lehigh 0
A three-run sixth inning propelled JMU to a 3-0 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon.

After producing just a pair of hits over the first five innings, the bats came alive in the sixth. With two outs, Hannah Hennessey doubled to right on a ground-rule double. On the ensuing at-bat, Phillips drover her home with a single to right, giving JMU the 1-0 lead.

Boseman stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered the biggest hit of the weekend, launching the 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for her second home run of the season, giving JMU a 3-0 advantage.

The Dukes shut the door with a three-up, three-down seventh to defeat the Mountain Hawks.

Alissa Humphrey was solid in the circle, pitching a complete-game four hitter. She allowed just one walk while striking out six to earn her second win of the season.
