Dukes Drop Pair of Games to Hofstra

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball dropped two nine-inning games against Hofstra on the first day of the weekend series at Veterans Memorial Park Saturday afternoon.

Despite the losses, the Dukes out-hit the Pride (17-14) and recorded more homers (3-2) across the pair of games.
Â
JMU fell to 15-18 (4-4 CAA) while the Pride improved to 13-18 (6-1 CAA).

GAME 1: JMU 3, HOF 4
Emily Phillips started things off for the Dukes with a two-run homer down the right field line to give JMU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Hofstra responded with a homerun of their own in the top of the fourth, followed by an RBI single to tie up the game.Â
Â
A shot through the left side from Hannah Shifflett sent Lauren Fulton home to give the Dukes a 3-2 edge. However, the Pride tied it up in the top of the fifth when they scored on a passed ball.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh, the game was forced into extra innings.
Â
JMU's Alissa Humphrey struck out five batters in the extras, but Hofstra was able to score on a sac bunt in the top of the ninth to hold a 4-3 advantage. Â

The Pride recorded a quick three outs in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game of the day.
Â
Humphrey pitched the final 5.0 innings for the Dukes and recorded 11 strikeouts.

GAME 2: JMU 5, HOF 6
JMU started off strong in the bottom of the first with RBI singles from both Lexi Rogers and Kylee Gleason.

Following two scoreless innings, Hofstra hit their second homer of the day to put the Pride on the board.

Shifflett notched her 13th dinger of the season in the bottom of the fifth, which was immediately followed by a home run from Jasmine Hall to give JMU a 4-1 lead. To end the inning, Reed Butler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to add another run for the Dukes.

A series of runs from the Pride in the sixth and seventh innings kotted up the game at five to send the game into extra innings once again. Hofstra took the lead in the top of the ninth and the Dukes were unable to respond when they stepped into the batter's box.

Alexis Bermudez pitched a season-best seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings.

The Dukes will seek redemption over the Pride in their final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball.
