JMU Collects First Sun Belt Win Over Coastal Carolina in Extras

CONWAY, S.C. – James Madison softball evened the weekend series at Coastal Carolina with a thrilling 2-1 victory in eight innings to earn its first Sun Belt Conference win on Saturday evening at St. John Stadium.

The Dukes improved to 14-7 on the season and 1-1 in Sun Belt play, while the Chanticleers fell to 24-5 and 1-1.

Freshman Kylah Berry tossed a complete game in her second career start to earn the victory in circle, while freshman Kate Carrier drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eight.

For Berry (3-0), she struck out three CCU batters while yielding six hits, three walks and one earned run. Additionally, she conceded zero extra-base hits in the win.

At the plate, three Dukes recorded two hits, as Carrier and sophomore Kylee Gleason each produced RBI hits, while graduate student Hallie Hall reached base twice. Graduate student Avery Pinder rounded out the hits with the lone double of the game.

This was JMU's second eight-inning win of the season, joining its 14-11 victory back on Feb. 26 at NC State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coastal Carolina scored first, off an RBI single up the middle by Diamond Williams in the bottom of the second.
- The Dukes quickly answered in the top of the third, as Gleason tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to plate Pinder.
- Coastal threatened with a runner in scoring position in the fifth and later had a runner on base in the seventh before Berry and the Dukes retired Coastal.
- With runners on first and second with one away in the eight, Carrier belted a single to left, scoring Gleason from second for the go-ahead run.
- In the bottom half, Coastal got the initial batter aboard, but JMU shut down the next three batters to secure the win.
