CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – James Madison faced the toughest competition in the region, as a pair of individuals and one doubles tandem advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship (Oct. 17-20), which was hosted by the University of Virginia at Boar's Head Resort.
Daria Munteanu and
Elena Kraleva both won a pair of matches in the main draw to reach the round of 16, while the team of
Ines Oliveira and
Sophie Williams also went 2-1 in doubles to move through to the same round.
JMU won a total of 11 matches in Charlottesville, with eight singles victories and three doubles triumphs. In addition to Munteanu and Kraleva,
Mia Saveljic led all players with a 3-1 singles mark, going 2-0 in qualifying and winning a main-draw consolation bout.
Joining Oliveira and Williams in the doubles win column were Kraleva and
Corinna Rietmann, who advanced to the round of 32.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Singles Qualifying
- Saveljic went 2-0 in qualifying to advance through to the main draw, defeating George Washington's Alejandra Ramirez (6-2, 6-2) and Virginia Tech's Charlotte Cartledge (6-2, 6-4).
- After falling in her first match, Reka Matko bounced back with a straight-set win over Richmond's Claire Le Du (6-4, 6-3) in a consolation match.
Singles Main Draw
- In the opening round, Munteanu won a tight match against VT's Arina Gamretkaia (7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4) while Kraleva used a tiebreak win in the first to down Howard's Nadia Pegram (7-6 (8), 6-4).
- Of the three first-round setbacks for JMU, two were against two of the region's top-10 seeds.
- In the round of 32, the Dukes defeated a pair of Sun Belt opponents, as Munteanu first earned a solid win Old Dominion's Lidiia Rasskouskaia (6-3, 6-2). Kraleva also won in straight sets, beating Marshall's Sophia Hurrion (6-4, 6-1).
- In the sweet 16, the runs for Munteanu and Kraleva ended, as Munteanu fell to top-seeded Annabelle Xu of Virginia (6-2, 6-4), while Kraleva lost a close bout with No. 2 seed Sara Ziodato of UVA (6-4, 6-4).
- Saveljic salvaged a consolation victory, rolling past Loyola's Christine Richiez (6-2, 6-1).
Doubles Main Draw
- The opening round saw JMU capture two wins, as Kraleva and Rietmann defeated Morgan State's Lauryn Hall and Roua Limem (8-5) while Oliveira and Williams dispatched George Mason's Brooklyn Siegel and Mary Young (8-2).
- In the second round, Oliveira and Williams beat a solid squad in Maryland's Katherine Hung and Tamari Gogoshidze (8-4), while UVA's Martina Salas and Xu downed Kraleva and Rietmann (8-2).
- The weekend concluded at the hands of host UVA, as Meggie Navarro and Ziodato claimed the round-of-16 win versus Oliveira and Williams (8-1).
