Softball Works Another Split at ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – The James Madison softball team split two games for the second straight day at the ASU Invitational on Saturday at Farrington Stadium.

After JMU (12-6) defeated UC San Diego, 6-3, in the first game, the Dukes fell, 4-2, to Omaha in their second game. With the loss, the Tritons dropped to 4-12, while the Mavericks improved to 12-7 with their win.

Infielder Jasmine Hall notched the 100th base hit of her career in the loss to Omaha and finished the day 4-of-8 (.500) at the plate. Alissa Humphrey (4-2) picked up her fourth win of the season and 35th in her career in relief versus UC San Diego, working 3.1 scoreless innings. Her career total of 35 wins is now sixth all-time for a JMU career, moving past Liz George (2002-05).

KK Mathis finished 5-of-9 (.556) at the plate for the Dukes, hitting a home run against UC San Diego and driving in four runs. Despite striking out a career-high eight batters, Payton List was charged with the loss against Omaha after yielding four runs (three earned). Molly Grube, making her second appearance of the weekend, picked up the first save of her career in the win against the Tritons.

How It Happened
JMU 6, UC San Diego 3
- A pair of doubles gave UC San Diego a 1-0 first-inning lead, chasing starter Kirsten Fleet from the game.
- Reed Butler reached on a two-out single and advanced to third on a throwing error, and Mathis doubled to center to tie the game at 1-1.
- Hall lined a leadoff double down the left field line, and Mathis hit her second home run in as many days to extend the JMU lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
- Mathis pushed the JMU advantage to 4-1, collecting her fourth RBI of the day on a single to center field in the fourth inning.
- Pinch hitter Lexi Rogers brought home two more runs on a sharp single to right, cushioning the Dukes' lead to 6-1.
- The Tritons cut JMU's lead to 6-3 on a two-run home run from Deena Peterson but would get no closer.
- Mathis led off the second inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on an infield single from List, making the score 1-0.
- Lily Romero doubled to right center, scoring List and adding to the Dukes' lead (2-0).
- A leadoff double in the bottom of the second from Omaha led to the Mavericks scratching across a run on a JMU fielding error, making the score 2-1.
- An Omaha runner reached first in the fifth inning on another Dukes' error and came around to score on a single to left field, tying the game at two.
- A two-RBI single from the Mavericks in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference as Omaha evened the all-time series 1-1 with JMU. Â
- Mathis tied her career-high in RBIs (4) for the second straight game against UC San Diego.
- Grube picked up her first collegiate save against UC San Diego. Â
- Humphrey's win marked the 35th of her career, moving her into sixth all-time in JMU career wins.
- In eight at-bats, Rogers has recorded six RBIs this season. She finished today 1-1 with two RBIs and a walk in two plate appearances.
- J. Hall joins Hallie Hall as Dukes to reach the 100 hits plateau this season.
