CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ninth-ranked Virginia used wins on every court to down James Madison, 7-0, in non-conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
UVA (3-0) took the early 1-0 lead by claiming all three doubles courts. After sweeping court one by a 6-0 score, the Cavaliers clinched the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 victories on courts two and three.
In singles play, Virginia used straight-set victories in each match to close out the 7-0 team win. The Cavaliers clinched the triumph by first taking courts three, one and four, not conceding more than three games in a set.
JMU (0-3) had a pair of set points in the opening frame on court five, but Melodie Collard, who ranks 59th in the nation, staved off both points from
Mia Saveljic and would go on to win the final nine games to clinch her court.
On the final court to finish,
Daria Munteanu pushed 32nd-ranked Annabelle Xu in both sets, before a back-and-forth bout ended in Xu's favor, at 6-4, 7-5.
JMU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a trip north to Syracuse for a 1 p.m. match at Drumlins Country Club.
