LEXINGTON, Va. – In her first collegiate meet, freshman
Nina Dominique produced a school-record time of 7.42 in the 60-meter dash in James Madison track & field's season-opening meet at VMI's Colonel Bev Read Opener inside the Corps Physical Training Facility on Saturday afternoon.
Dominique registered the time in the prelims before winning the finals in 7.43, comfortably beating out Keydet Naturale Faison (.7.58). The previous school record was 7.50, set by Tanique Carter in 2009 at the ECAC Indoor Championships.
Meanwhile, classmate
Mykenzie Britton captured a win in the 500-meter competition in 1:13.83 – good for No. 2 in the program record book. JMU's top time in the distance belongs to Anoush Stamm with an effort of 1:13.49 at the 2020 Liberty Kickoff.
Freshman
Bria Byrd also recorded a top-10 program mark on the track, going 5.75m (18-10.5) in the long jump for second in the competition in 10th in school history.
In the field, pole vaulter
Madelyn Moles cleared 3.65m (12-0) to tie for fourth in the JMU record book, improving upon her 3.50m (11-5.75) performance last indoor season.
Quoting Director Delethea Quarles
"Nina [Dominique] led the Dukes with breaking our school record in the 60-meter dash. She then came back with another amazing performance, winning both the 60-meter finals and the 300 meters. That contagious vibe continued as eight Dukes dominated the 500-meter competition, with all breaking 1:18, while McKenzie Britton just missed breaking that 500-meter school record. This certainly shows great promise for our upcoming season. We are proud of the hard work they put in since September's start of practice."
