NEW ORLEANS – James Madison junior
Daria Munteanu has been voted the final Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the 2025 spring season, the league announced on Wednesday.
It's the second career Sun Belt weekly honor for Munteanu, who was also honored on March 5. This week's accolade ups JMU's total to three for the season, as
Elena Kraleva also took home the laurel on March 26.
Munteanu went a combined 2-0 to lead JMU to a dramatic 4-3 win in the team's regular-season finale last Saturday at Coastal Carolina. The victory propelled JMU to a first-round bye and a No. 5 seed in this week's Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championship.
She opened the day by teaming with
Ines Oliveira for a 6-4 doubles win on court one against Nicole Abel and Anna Babayan.
In singles, the match result would come down to her on court two, and she overcame three match points while down a set in the process. After dropping the first set in the tiebreak, she faced a similar situation in the second, trailing 6-3 in the breaker to Aida Mitrache. Munteanu staved off the trio of match points, scoring five in a row to rally and force a third.
In the third set and with things tied up at 4-4, she broke Mitrache to take the lead and served out the ensuing game for an emphatic 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4 triumph.
Munteanu and the Dukes travel to Rome, Ga., for the 2025 Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championship and open play on Friday, April 25 against No. 4 seed South Alabama at 10 a.m.
