Stolen Bases and Timely Strikeouts Push Dukes Past Troy in SBC First Round

Aggressive baserunning was a separator in the ballgame as JMU (26-25) executed two double steals, including for the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth. The Dukes' finished withseven stolen bases against Troy (33-24), a single-game SBC Softball Championship record - surpassing FIU's six against Florida Atlantic on May 9, 2007.
Kylee Gleason was in the middle of all the action, as she finished the day with two hits and a pair of stolen bases, both of which were part of the double steals.
Following early woes, Payton List and Fleet notched timely strikeouts as List went the first four innings and allowed two runs on three hits, while fanning three to earn her 12th victory in the circle.
Despite giving up two runs in the top of the sixth, Fleet locked down the game for James Madison and her fourth save of 2025. Headed into the seventh inning in a one-run ballgame, Fleet struck out two of the three batters she saw to secure the 5-4 win.
Abbie Campbell, Raegan Wall, and Reed Butler provided the other base hits for the Dukes, with Campbell earning her fourth multi-hit game and an RBI. As Madison Edwards provided another RBI on a sacrifice fly to left center.
Caiden Oliva paced Troy with a two-hit day, which included an RBI double in the third inning.
Trojans' Ace Alyssa Faircloth was handed her eighth loss of the season, as she was on the hook for four runs on three hits with three wild pitches.
Kate Peters and Mya Folt finished the final two innings for Troy, as Peters was responsible for an unearned run in the sixth and Mya Holt pitched a scoreless seventh.
How It Happened
First Inning
- Makaley Boswell led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot to left field to put Troy up 1-0
Third Inning
- Oliva pushed the lead to 2-0 following an RBI double to left center
Fourth Inning
- The Dukes pulled off a double steal after Legzdin walked to cut the lead to 2-1
Fifth Inning
- List knotted the game up at two apiece with a sacrifice fly with one out
- Kylee Gleason and Lauren Fulton gave JMU the lead on another double steal to make it 3-2
Top of the Sixth Inning
- Â Edwards added to the lead on a sacrifice fly to left center to extend the lead 4-2
- Campbell singled to right field and advanced to second on an error to plate another for the three-run lead
Bottom of the Sixth Inning
- Cassidy Boltz tripled to right field with a runner on to cut the deficit to two runs, 5-3
- Kayden Dunn had a pinch-hit single through the right side to make it a one-run ballgame, 5-4
- James Madison improved to 2-2 in the Sun Belt Championship since joining the league in 2023
- With her third strikeout of the contest, List reached 150 in her career to join teammate Kirsten Fleet in that category
- Fleet's save was the sophomore's fourth of the season, now tied for the second-most in a single-season in program history
- With her two hits in Wednesday's contest, Gleason has 15 multi-hit performances on the season
- The Dukes improved to 5-6 in one-run games this season
- List's 12 wins in the circle is the most for a JMU player since Odicci Alexander (18) and Alissa Humphrey (14) in the 2021 season
- Including its eight stolen bases against George Mason on April 15, James Madison has the most stolen bases in a single game in non-conference and conference play in all of the Sun Belt in 2025
- Fulton's stolen base in the fourth inning marked the first of her career
- Legzdin's three swipes marked the seventh time this season that she has stolen two-plus bags
- Sitting at 23 stolen bases on the year, the freshman tied Morgan Health (2013) for the third-most stolen bases in a single season in program history
JMU will take on No. 1 Texas State in the SBC Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 8 at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT at the Troy Softball Complex on ESPN+
