Cliff Wood returns to JMU in the role of General Manager, negotiating Name, Image & Likeness arrangements with student-athletes. He previously served as President of the Montpelier Collective, following a run of several years as JMU Senior Associate AD for Development.
Wood retired following 28 years of corporate experience with a focus on revenue production and profit growth. He was instrumental in the growth of Carmax to its current status as a Fortune 200 company.
A Carmax fixture since 1993, Wood has served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer at the corporation’s Richmond headquarters since 2011. He oversaw all store strategies, including pricing, purchasing, margins, sales and strategic planning while also managing multiple departments, such as service operations, merchandising, commissioned sales and hourly employees. He climbed the ranks at Carmax from other positions in purchasing and sales.
Wood has been actively involved at his alma mater. He has served on the JMU Foundation Board of Trustees since 2012 in a role helping to drive private support to the university. He also served on the advisory board for the JMU Duke Club from 2004 to 2017.
Wood is a 1988 JMU graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He and wife, Kristen, have been married 30 years. Their daughter, Katie and her husband Drew have two children Ari (2) and Luke (8 months). Their son, Will is a JMU graduate who works with the football equipment staff.
