HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 31, 2005 -- Virginia freshman Kelly Quinn's (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) goal with 7:07 remaining lifted the fourth-ranked Cavaliers' women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over James Madison Wednesday night at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Junior Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) sent a short pass from the left to Quinn, whose shot from close range hit the underside of the cross bar and bounced in.
The Cavaliers improved to 3-0 with their third shutout of the season. JMU dropped to 2-1 with its first loss of the year.
JMU senior goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata,Ontario/Holy Trinity) helped keep the Dukes in the game with several key second-half stops. In the 53rd minute she punched a shot by senior Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) over the top of the goal. Seconds later she stopped a 22-yard shot off a rebound by freshman Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy).
JMU's best scoring chance came in the 85th minute, when sophomore Annie Lowry's (Butler, Pa./Butler) header was stopped by junior goalkeeper Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake)
De Vries was credited with two saves as she recorded her second complete-game shutout of the year.
