HARRISONBURG, Va., -- Junior forward Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) had game highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds, and James Madison rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to beat Old Dominion 72-65 in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball at the JMU Convocation Center Wednesday.
JMU trailed 42-34 with 12:23 left in the game but took control with a 16-0 scoring burst. Carter had seven points during the Dukes' decisive run and capped the rally with a three-point field goal to give JMU a 50-42 advantage with 6:13 remaining.
Old Dominion got no closer than five points again (three times, last at 54-49 with 3:15 to play), and JMU hit on 16 of 20 free throws during the final 3:33.
The victory raised JMU's season record to 5-12 and its CAA mark to 2-5. Old Dominion is 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Sophomore forward Kyle Swanston (Spring Hill, Fla./Hernando) contributed five points, including a three-pointer, during JMU's 16-0 run, and Old Dominion went without a field goal from the 15:36 mark of the final half until 5:56 remained in the game.
Sophomore forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) hit on two free throws with 3:00 left after Old Dominion had gotten to within 54-49, and freshman guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) scored on a driving shot in the lane with 2:25 to play for a 58-49 JMU edge.
Junior guard Brandon Johnson (Orlando, Fla.) scored from the lane to pull the visiting Monarchs to within 58-51 with 2:13 left, but James scored on the inside with 1:40 to play for a 60-51 JMU lead and the Dukes sealed the victory from the foul line. Curtis hit on hit on eight of 10 free throws during the final 3:33, and JMU survived three Old Dominion three-point field goals during the final 32 seconds after leading 68-56.
Carter hit on each of his eight shots from the field and had his third scoring-rebounding "double-double" as a JMU player and his second 20-point outing. He played 31 minutes and led four Dukes in double figures in scoring.
James added 15 points, Curtis 13 and Swanston 10 for JMU. James had seven rebounds and Curtis a career-high six.
The Dukes shot 51.3 percent (20-39) overall from the field and 62.3 percent (12-19) during the final half. They hit on five of 12 three-point attempts (41.7 percent) and on 27 of 35 free throws (77.1 percent). The overall shooting effort was JMU's best in 14 games and second best of the season.
The Dukes also had a 39-25 rebounding advantage.
Old Dominion shot 37.1 percent overall from the field (23-62) and 39.3 percent (11-28) from three-point range.
The Monarchs were led in scoring by senior forward Valdas Vasylius (Klaipeda, Lithuania) with 15 points.
JMU returns to action Saturday (Jan. 20) in a 7 p.m. game at Georgia State. The contest will be the first for the Dukes' at Georgia State. Old Dominion Saturday is at Virginia Commonwealth for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
