HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 29, 2008 -- James Madison rallied to tie Washington State 2-2 and William and Mary posted a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Syracuse in Friday night's opening round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational Women's Soccer Tournament.
In the JMU-Washington State game, Dukes' sophomore Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) had a goal and an assist, including the tying score early in the second half.
The Dukes took an early lead on a goal by junior Corky Julien (Williamstown, Ontario/Char-Lan District) just 8:16 into the match. Rynier delivered a pass into the box to Julien, who dribbled a few steps and scored on a seven-yard shot.
A goal by Washington State sophomore Emma Stolz (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) evened the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute. A loose ball in the box hit off a JMU player and a Cougar and bounced out to the edge of the box, where Stolz one-timed a hard shot into the left corner of the goal.
Cougar junior Maggie Dougher (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) set up her team's second goal as she curved a free kick from the right side of the field into the box, where freshman Ali Fenter (Spokane, Wash./Shadle Park) hit a five-yard shot into the net.
Rynier's tying score came when she launched a ball from outside the box on the right side of the field. It sailed into the far upper corner of the goal just 2:28 into the second half.
Less than 10 minutes later the Dukes had a flurry of shots but could not convert them into goals. Rynier hit a hard shot from about 25 yards out that was saved by WSU sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin). The ball rebounded to senior Lindsay Bowers (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), but her ensuing shot hit the cross bar.>
