SUNSET BEACH, N.C., September 21, 2008 ? The James Madison University women's golf team opened its 2008 season with a sixth-place finish at his weekend's Sea Trail Invitational, held at Sunset Beach, N.C.
The Dukes shot rounds of 314, 314 and 303 to finish with a three-round total of 931 to finish sixth out of 17 teams. Leading the way for Madison was sophomore Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweeden/Sanda Gymnasiet) who finished in 14th-place out of 93 entrants. She shot rounds of 80, 77 and 73 to finish with a total of 230.
Finishing tied for 21st was junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy), after shooting rounds of 81, 76 and 76 for a total of 233. Freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) made her JMU debut with a 36th-place finish. She shot rounds of 77, 82 and 78 to finish with a 237.
The Dukes five-person team was rounded out by sophomore Kristen Harrington (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and sophomore Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino). Harrington (76-86-76?238) finished tied for 44th while second-team All-CAA selection Mesa (81-79-79?239) finished tied for 50th.
East Tennessee State's Laura Jansone (73-70-73?216) was the only player not to finish over par, taking first place in the three-day event. She was followed in second by Bambee Dela Paz (76-75-71?222) of
