BROOKLINE, Mass., Oct. 23, 2009 -- In a battle of the second- and third-place teams in the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer standings, Northeastern edged James Madison 2-1 Friday evening at Parsons Field.
JMU entered the game just one point ahead of the Huskies in the league standings, but Northeastern's victory moved the Huskies into second place with 18 points. JMU now has 16 points and slipped from second to third place with the loss. The Dukes are tied for third North Carolina Wilmington, which also has 16 points following a 2-1 overtime win at Drexel Friday night.
Hofstra maintained its hold onto first place with a 3-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth. The Pride, which will host JMU on Sunday (1 p.m.), has 22 points.
Defending CAA champion Northeastern extended its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2) while improving its overall record to 10-3-3 and its CAA record to 5-1-3.
JMU's overall record stands at 9-7-1, and the Dukes have a 5-3-1 record in conference play.
Northeastern took an early lead in the match when Liza Rebello scored off a rebound in the 18th minute. Greta Samuelsdottir was credited with an assist on the play.
The Huskies pushed their advantage to 2-0 on a score by Devin Petta in the 72nd minute. Sandra Magnusdottir's through ball to Petta set up the goal.
Less than five minutes later, the Dukes got on the scoreboard. Senior Ashley Flateland (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor) netted the goal in the 76th minute, with junior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recording her 36th career assist on Flateland's score. Rynier now shares the JMU career assist record with Carrie Proost (1990-94).
Northeastern held a 16-13 advantage on shots, while JMU took five corner kicks to four for the Huskies.
Dukes' redshirt junior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) finished with five saves. Northeastern goalie Stephanie Gordon stopped seven shots.
