GORDONSVILLE, Va., Oct. 6, 2009 - The James Madison men's golf team had its streak of eight consecutive tournaments where it finished fifth or better snapped on Tuesday, after finishing seventh in the Frank Landrey Invitational. The Dukes carded a 304-294-307=905 in the 54-hole even at the Spring Hill Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va.
Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led all Madison golfers, firing a 74-71-75=220 to finish tied for 11th. Sophomore Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) also tied for 11th after shooting a 71-71-78=220, but participated in the event as an individual and did not count towards JMU's team score.
Senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Cooperative School) tied for 40th in his first action of the season, carding a 76-73-79=228. Sophomore Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tied with Montano for 40th, shooting a 80-74-74=228.
Freshman Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) fired a 76-76-79=231 to finish in 46th. Junior Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) rounded out the JMU five-man team in a tie for 48th after shooting a 78-76-79=233.
Freshman Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) made his Dukes debut in the event, participating as an individual and finishing tied for 48th after carding a 75-71-87=233.
Richmond's Sam Beach shot Tuesday's low round, a 4-under-par 68, to win the tournament's individual honors. Beach carded a 73-72-68=213 to finish at 3-under-par, one shot ahead of William & Mary's Brandon Parker (72-68-74=214). Richmond's Daniel Walker fired a 71-69-76=216 to finish third, followed by William & Mary's Scott Saal (74-71-72=217) in fourth. Richmond's Robert Lindstrom (75-70-73=218), Liberty's Robert Karlsson (74-70-74=218) and Virginia's Henry Smart (74-70-74=218) and Steven Rojas (72-72-74=218) rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth.
Richmond took the team championship after carding a 292-284-290=866. The Spiders finished 14 strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb (295-289-296=880). Liberty (297-291-293=881) finished third, followed by William & Mary (300-288-299=887) in fourth and Longwood (300-287-301=888) rounding out the top five.
The Dukes return to action on Oct. 19-20 when they travel to Beallsville, Md. to play in the Georgetown Invitational.
