Five Dukes Named Cobalt Golf All-American Scholars

NORMAN, Okla. – Five members of James Madison men's golf took home academic honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America on Monday, Aug. 3.
René Bergendi, Jonas DeLeon, Michael Hake, Alex Seibal, and Václav Tichý were all named Division I Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars. JMU was one of 23 NCAA Division I teams to have five or more recipients of the award.
Bergendi took a big step forward in 2025-26, finishing with 63 birdies and a stroke average of 73.38. He earned a spot on the Dean's List in both semesters and was named a JMU Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete in the spring.
DeLeon played in 20 rounds during his first season at JMU, tying for 12th at the 2026 Sun Belt Championship. He has been named to the Dean's List, a JMU Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete, and earned a spot on the CSC Academic All-District Team.
Hake played in all 33 rounds in his first season in the Purple and Gold, finishing with 100 birdies and a stroke average of 72.42 as a fixture in the JMU lineup.
Tichý closed his career with the third-lowest stroke average in program history, finishing with a 72.41 mark over four seasons while graduating with a degree in quantitative finance. Seibal also closed out his career at JMU this spring, compiling a stroke average of 73.56 and earning spots on the Dean's List in the fall and spring semesters, along with a spot on the College Sports Communicators All-District® Men's At-Large Team.
To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their associate's degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
