NEWARK, Del., Mar. 22, 2009 ? For the eighth time this season and second time in as many games, the James Madison softball team picked up a come-from-behind victory, as the Dukes defeated the University of Delaware 5-3 on Sunday.
JMU improved to 16-5 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Delaware dropped to 5-10 and 1-2 in the CAA.
Madison took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second on a pair of walks by UD starter Anne Marie Pagano. With two outs, sophomore designated player Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) worked a 2-2 count before doubling to the right-field fence to give JMU the 4-3 lead.
Spitzer had four hits, including three doubles and five RBI in the three-game series.
Madison senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) shut down the Blue Hen attack the rest of the way, as she allowed just one walk in the final three UD at bats. For the game, the first-team All-CAA selection pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, three earned runs, walked two and struck out four.
For the third time in the series the Dukes scored in the first inning, scoring two runs off Delaware starter Anne Marie Pagano. Junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) tripled down the right-field line to lead off the game and scored one batter later as junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) singled off the third baseman's glove. Simons advanced to second on a groundout and third on a fielding error by Delaware first baseman Michelle Kenney. A second Blue Hen error, this time a throwing error on shortstop Kim Ovittore, allowed Simons to score.
