HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 15, 2010 - James Madison scored once in each half and shut out Drexel 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer Friday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
JMU upped its overall record to 9-6-0 and improved to 5-2-0 in conference play. Drexel's record is now 5-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in CAA games.
The Dukes took a season-high 34 shots to only eight shots by the Dragons, and JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) needed to make only two saves to get her school record-tying 21st career shutout. Wszalek, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season, matched the JMU career record of 21 set by Jessica Hussey (2002-05).
The Dukes' first-half goal came from sophomore Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) in the 30th minute. Senior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) got the ball to Menzie, who dribbled toward the goal and hit a hard shot from the middle of the box from 12 yards out. The ball hit the left post and ricocheted across the goal into the right side of the net.
Tisinger netted JMU's second goal in the 71st minute. Junior Yolie Anderson-Golhor (Ottawa, Ontario/Louis-Riel) sent a pass ahead to Tisinger, who sprinted ahead of Drexel's defenders, got past senior goalkeeper Nicki Sinclair (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and hit a six-yard shot into an open net.
Sinclair finished with 11 saves.
JMU remains tied for third place in the CAA standings but it's now only a two-way tie between the Dukes and North Carolina Wilmington (5-2-0). UNCW beat George Mason (4-3-0) 2-1 Friday, which pushed the Patriots from tied for third to fifth place in the league standings.
Hofstra (7-0-0) leads the league, and Georgia State (5-1-1) is in second place. Both teams won Friday, with Hofstra beating William and Mary 3-2 and Georgia State winning 2-1 at Towson.
NOTES:
* Tisinger increased her school career goals total to 22 and her career assist total to 22. She moved into a tie for seventh on JMU's career assist list, where she now shares the spot with Kim Germain (2005-08).
* Wszalek now has 27 total career shutouts (solo and shared) and is just two away from that record, which is shared by Stacy Bilodeau (1994-97) and Hussey, each with 29.
