HOT SPRINGS, Va., April 18, 2010 - The James Madison men's golf team carded a 304-309-310=923 to finish eighth out of 11 teams at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship at The Homestead Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va. on Sunday.
Towson captured its first men's golf championship with a team score of 885.
Freshman Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) was JMU's top finisher, tying for 19th with a 71-80-77=228. Senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Cooperative School) and sophomore Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) tied for 31st. Montano carded an 80-75-78=233 while Smith finished with a 77-78-78=233. Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and sophomore Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) rounded out the five-man team in a tie for 34th.
Four Towson golfers finished in the top 12 to lead the Tigers to the team title. William and Mary finished second with a 292-305-299=896. VCU (290-303-304=897) took third while Old Dominion (304-301-294=899) and Georgia State (295-305-299=900) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Delaware (301-298-307=906), UNCW (304-307-297=908), JMU, Drexel (309-302-320=931), George Mason (308-319-312=939) and Hofstra (331-332-341=1004) rounded out the field.
Delaware Justin Martinson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after claiming the individual championship. He fired a 69-72-72=213 to beat out the 55-man field. ODU's Eric Onesi (73-73-71=217), UNCW's Josh Brock (74-74-71=219), Georgia State's Alan Fowler (73-74-73=220) and Towson's Nyasha Mauchaza (72-73-75=220) and Chris Scialo (71-76-73=220) joined Martinson on the all-tournament team.
