RICHMOND, Va., Aug. 20, 2010 - The James Madison women's soccer team edged Richmond 2-1 in the season-opening game for both teams Friday night at Ukrop Park.
The Dukes scored twice in less than five minutes in the first half to take a 2-0 lead and then held the Spiders scoreless until the 83rd minute.Â
JMU senior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) got the Dukes on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 19:40 mark.
Then senior Corinna Strickland (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored on a free kick from 40 yards out at 24:16, netting what proved to be the game-winning score.
Richmond's goal came with 7:51 remaining on a shot by Becca Wan from 20 yards. An assist was credited to Sarah Scheurich.
For the game the Spiders held a 16-14 edge on shots.Â
JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) finished with four saves. UR starting keeper Mellissa Pacheco made three saves in the first half, and Andrea Young played the second period and stopped five shots.
"It was a great start for the 2010 season," said head coach Dave Lombardo. "We came out and played a very strong first half and got a couple of nice goals. Teresa scored a really nice goal; she hit a long-range shot that caught the goalkeeper off her line. Corinna scored one on a set piece on 40-yard shot that the goalkeeper mis-handled.
"In the second half Richmond turned up the intensity level and created a bunch more chances. After they scored we defended for the last eight minutes and held on to win. It was a good road win. It wasn't our best, but we gutted it out and played well enough to win."
