JMU Softball Drops Doubleheader at Towson

TOWSON, Md., April 30, 2011 – Sophomore pitcher Katie Lingmai threw a shutout in game one and followed it up with a save in game two to lead Towson to a doubleheader sweep over James Madison Softball at the Towson Center Softball Complex on Saturday. TU won game one 6-0 before taking the nightcap 8-6.
The Dukes dropped to 27-21 overall and 6-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association while the Tigers improved to 24-23, 8-7.
In game two, freshman pitcher Brittany Jeans (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood) took the loss to drop to 6-9. She allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out one in three innings pitched. Junior right-hander Casey Mansfield (Suffolk, Va./Isle of Wight) pitched 2/3 innings of relief and gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks. Senior Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) gave up three hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
Dominique Ortega earned the win to improve to 9-11. She ceded six runs, three earned, on 12 hits in six innings. The right-hander did not walk or strikeout a batter. Katie Lingmai earned her first save of the season with an inning of two-hit relief.
Offensively, JMU pounded out 14 hits led by freshman third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while redshirt senior left fielder Chel'sea Ryan (Sandston, Va./Henrico) added two hits, including a double, a run and a RBI. Junior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Va./Danvers) chipped in with a single, a double and a run scored in four at-bats.
Second baseman Lindsey Kent led the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with a home run. Left fielder Rachel Miller went 2-for-4 and scored three runs while first baseman Andrea Stevenson had a double, a run and three RBIs.
TU took advantage of a JMU error to strike for the game's opening run in the top of the first. Miller reached on a fielding error to lead off the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a double by center fielder Erika Stasch.
Towson extended its lead in the third inning on back-to-back hits by Miller and shortstop Sammi DiPompo. Miller doubled to lead off the frame before scoring on DiPompo's single up the middle.
Madison came back to tie the score in the fourth inning by taking advantage of three hits and a Towson throwing error. Sophomore first baseman Haley Johnson (Broad Run, Va./Ashburn) started the rally with a one-out double.
