Softball Earns Split on Day One of Retriever Classic

BALTIMORE, Md., March 2, 2012 – The James Madison softball team earned a split on day one of the UMBC Retriever Classic on Friday as it dropped game one 3-0 to Iona before exploding for nine runs and 11 hits in game two for a 9-5 win over Canisius.
JMU ran its record to 4-7 on the season while Iona improved to 5-4. Canisius dropped to 1-4 with its loss.
Freshman right-hander Reba DePriest (Apache Junction, Ariz./Skyline) tossed her first career complete game, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits and three walks. She struck out four while to improve to 1-2 on the season.
Caroline Main took the loss for the Golden Griffins to drop to 1-2. She lasted just 1 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits and three walks. Jen Consaul pitched the final 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits and striking out two.
Freshman right fielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) went 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI to pace the Dukes offensively. Senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) added two hits, including a home run, two runs and two RBIs while junior first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Griffins were led by second baseman Katie Medina who went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Right fielder Lauren Falzone added two hits and a run scored in four at-bats.
Canisius jumped out to a quick lead in game two. Falzone led off the game with an infield single and advanced to second on a walk. Medina singled up the middle to drive in the game's first run before shortstop Katie Lancellotti lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 2-0.
The JMU offense responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Senior second baseman Caitlen Manning (Prince George, Va./Prince George) led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a bunt single by junior center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange). Three straight singles by Burnham, Johnson and Manning each scored runs for Madison to give it the lead.
Burnham increased the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third. The senior turned on a 1-1 pitch, launching a solo home run out to deep left field to lead off the frame. It was the fourth homer of the year for the senior and the 28th of her career, leaving her two shy
