Women's Tennis Starts Strong at Navy Blue & Gold Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 11, 2013 – The James Madison women's tennis squad went 6-1 in doubles and 1-0 in singles to start the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational.
In the lone singles match of the day for the Dukes, freshman Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) powered to an 8-1 victory over Mary Washington's Michaela Dowd in the opening round of Flight 'C' singles. She will compete in the full round-of-16 on Saturday.
Nelson also partnered with senior Jacqueline Palmucci(Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) for two victories in the Flight 'B' doubles bracket. The pair defeated Navy's Allie Pavlansky and Vivian Chau 8-4 in the round-of-16 before taking down Longwood's Sarah Moomau and Paloma Alatorre 8-2.
Senior Ruxandra Andriescu(Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) and freshman Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) also went on a 2-0 sweep in Flight 'B' doubles on day one of the tournament. In the round-of-16, the duo picked up an 8-5 victory over Longwood's Mason Thomas and Bethany Law and, in the quarterfinals, they won 8-4 over Towson's Cailey Easdale and Lorena Ferrer.
In the Flight 'A' doubles bracket, junior Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and freshman Alex Huie(Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) also tallied a 2-0 performance. They started the day with an 8-1 victory over Navy's Noelle Kaufmann and Mikaela Carlson in the round-of-16, then notched an 8-0 shutout against Georgetown's Kelly Comolli and Madeline Jaegar.
Sophomore Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson High School) and junior Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) battled with George Washington's Lana Robins and Grace Egger in the Flight 'A' doubles round-of-16, but fell 8-7(5).
The Navy Blue & Gold Invitational continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in Annapolis, Md., for day two of the three-day event.
