HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 13, 2013 – An own goal in the second overtime period gave James Madison a 2-1 win over visiting Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer game Sunday at University Park.
Junior Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) lined up for a corner kick for the Dukes in the 102nd minute. Her kick ricocheted off multiple players before finally bouncing off a defender and into the net to give the Dukes the win.
Earlier in overtime, Lofton had to make a last second save on a near own goal that would have given Towson the win. She was able to get to the ball and kick it out just before it crossed the goal line.
JMU took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal by senior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI). Sophomore Kelly Kerrigan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) tallied her second assist of the season as she put the ball into the box with a corner kick, and Sparks finished top right for her career-high third goal of the season.
Towson tied the game in the 76th minute, receiving a goal from their go-to player, Emily Banes. The game-tying score was the senior's CAA-leading 12th of the season.
Sophomore goalie Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made just one save for the Dukes, but it was one of the most important plays of the game. The Tigers' Marissa Green fired a shot in the 97th minute that would have gone just under the crossbar and potentially won the game, but Forrest made a leaping one-handed save.
Towson goalie Erin Quinn was busy for most of the game, facing 12 shots on goal from JMU. She finished with 10 saves.
The Dukes improved to 11-4-0 overall and 3-1 in the conference. They have won eight of their past nine games. The Tigers, who have improved dramatically from a one-win season a year ago, dropped to 7-8-1 and 2-4-0 in the CAA.
JMU continues conference play with a home game against UNC Wilmington on Friday at 7 p.m. the game will be broadcast free of charge on Madizone HD Sportsnet presented by the JMU Alumni Association.
