GREENVILLE, N.C. - The James Madison women's golf team finished ninth at the 2013 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Oct. 7. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by East Carolina University, was played at Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
The Dukes slid two spots in the final round with a 26-over 314 to finish at 58-over 922. East Tennessee State led from start to finish, wrapping up the team title at 33-over 897, four shots ahead of runner-up Middle Tennessee. Host East Carolina was third at 40-over 904, with Georgia State at 44-over 908 and Old Dominion at 45-over 909 completing the top five teams.
Sophomore Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was the top Duke for the second straight event, posting her second consecutive top-15 finish with a tie for 15th at 11-over 227. Junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) was next in 24th at 13-over 227, with senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) and freshman Nicola Haynes (Newcastle-Upon-Tyle, England) tied for 47th at 21-over 237. Junior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) was the final scoring JMU player in a tie for 66th at 27-over 243. Playing as an individual, sophomore Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) finished 74th at 29-over 245.
Middle Tennessee's Avery George held on to her second round lead for a three-shot victory with a 1-under 215, outpacing Longwood's Amanda Steinhagen at 2-over 28.
Madison will wrap up its fall schedule on Sun.-Mon., Oct. 27-28 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational at Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
