Men's Tennis Notches 6-1 Victory over Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Feb. 15, 2013 -- The James Madison men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring in resounding fashion, taking down Hofstra 6-1 on the road in its league opener. JMU swept all three doubles matches and went 5-1 in single duals with no head-to-head bout going deeper than two sets.

JMU is 1-4 on the season and 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra is 1-1 for the spring.

The Dukes started the day off sweeping their doubles matches to take the first point of the day. At the No. 2 position, seniors Greg Vladimirsky (Staten Island, N.Y./Broward Virtual) and Hugo Ramadier (Paris, France/Lycee Francais Chateabriand (Northern Arizona)) took down Joseph Erichsen and Matthew Gemmell 8-1 in their first pairing of the spring. Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) and Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes (Shorter)) notched their first win as a pair with an 8-3 victory over Beau Wills and Johan Vila at the No. 3 position.

In the No. 1 position, the freshman-senior duo of Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) and Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) defeated Hofstra's Ari Richman and Adrien Bailly 8-2. The pair is now 11-4 for the year when playing as a unit on the court.

For the senior core of the team, Pool earned his 14th win for the 2012-13 school year when he defeated Richman 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot. Sentenac snapped a five-match losing streak with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win against Vila at the No. 4 position, and Vladimirsky tallied another point for the Dukes by seizing a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bailly.

Freshmen Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) and Stirling both claimed victory over their opponents on Friday at the No. 5 position and No. 3 position, respectively. Branth defeated Erichsen 6-2, 6-0 for his first win of the spring, and Stirling knocked off Gemmell 6-2, 6-2 to move to 7-6 as a singles player for the purple and gold.

The lone loss for Madison came by default in the No. 6 match between Russo and Hofstra's Rhyaan Gill.

Madison returns to the courts Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J., at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Dukes will take on the 6-0 Highlanders at 4 p.m.
