TOWSON, Md., April 13, 2013 – The James Madison women's tennis team moved to 3-3 against Colonial Athletic Association teams and 10-6 overall with a 7-0 victory at Towson Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fell to 11-9 on the year and 2-4 in CAA matches.
The Dukes swept the doubles point with wins at all three positions. Senior Michelle Nguyen(Springfield, Va./South County) and sophomore Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) picked up an 8-4 win over Ayana Dow and Lorena Ferrer at No. 1 doubles, their fifth straight win as a pair and 11th overall this spring. They are 3-1 against league opponents in doubles competition.
Senior Katherine Bulling(Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and freshman Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson) also tallied their 11th win together when they dropped Ariel Burke and Nani Lizana 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. The duo is 11-5 this spring, including 4-2 versus conference foes. Juniors Jacqueline Palmucci(Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) and Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) notched their eighth win this spring when they rolled 8-1 over Moriah Burke and Cailey Easdale at No. 3 doubles. They are 2-1 over CAA members and 8-2 overall.
Palmucci won her fourth straight match and ninth of the spring against Lizana, taking her down in two sets (7-5, 6-3) at No. 2 singles. She is 9-6 in solo duals and 4-2 against conference opponents.
Andriescu and Wirth each battled through three sets to pick up points at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Andriescu came back from a 6-4 loss to Ferrer in set one of No. 3 singles to win set two 6-2 and the decisive third set tiebreaker 10-5. She is now 7-8 heading into the final match of the regular season.
In her match, Wirth defeated Andrea Samlin 6-3 in set one of their No. 5 singles match before dropping the second set 6-4. She notched the win with a score of 10-7 in the tiebreaker and improved to 11-3 in her first collegiate dual season.
Bulling also posted an 11th dual victory (11-4), knocking off Nisha Shah 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Fellow senior Megan Douglass(Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) grabbed her 10th spring win (10-4) with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ariel Burke at No. 6 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Pinchoff defeated Dow 6-4, 6-0 and improved to 8-8 this spring.
