BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team recorded a third-place finish in the Keith Hills Invitational, April 1-2. Hosted by Campbell University, the 54-hole tournament was played at Keith Hills Country Club (Par 71 - 6,609 yards) in Buies Creek, N.C. Due to a weather delay and darkness, the suspended second round and complete third round were played on day two of the tournament.
The Dukes completed the second round at 5-over 289 to move up to third and then held on to third through the final 18, shooting at 15-over 299 to finish the tournament at 32-over 884. Gardner-Webb and host Campbell jousted for the victory going to the final round, with GW coming away with the tournament victory at 6-over 858, five shots ahead of the Camels.
JMU senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) was the top finisher for the Dukes at 7-over 220, tied for 14th. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern) moved up four places from the first round to finish tied for 21st at 9-over 22. Tied for 27th, freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./ North Cross) rounded out the 54-holes at 11-over 224.Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./ Kellam) placed 30th at 12-over 224. Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) tied for 39th, ending the tournament at 17-over 230. Individual entry Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) tied Leeper for the team low round score of 70 in the second round and finished tied for 37th at 13-over 226.
JMU will compete next on Mon.-Tue., April 15-16 in the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, S.C.
