PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A pair of second-half goals by the James Madison field hockey team lifted the Dukes over Drexel on Friday night at Buckley Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
JMU improved to 10-5 overall and 2-2 against Colonial Athletic Association foes while Drexel fell to 8-7 overall and 0-3 against league opponents.
Senior back
Dana Allaband (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) tied the game at 1-1 at the 37:57 mark of play with a  successful penalty stroke goal. It marked her second tally of the season and the first score off a penalty stroke for the Dukes in 2014.
With four minutes left in regulation, senior forward
Bethany Ashworth (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) deflected the game-winning goal into the cage following a corner play. Junior midfielder
Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) tallied an assist on the goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and the JMU defense held the Dragons scoreless over the final 51:20 of play. George earned the win for JMU with three saves and one goal allowed while Jantien Gunter was tabbed with the loss for the Dragons after allowing two goals and committing three saves.
Drexel got on the board first off a penalty corner thanks to a high-lifted shot by Jessica McCarthy in the 19th minute.
JMU outshot Drexel 8-5 overall, including a 4-1 advantage in the second stanza. The Dukes also edged the Dragons 7-3 in penalty corners.
Sunday, Oct. 26, marks the Dukes' final non-conference game of the 2014 regular season. They travel to Rutgers for a 2 p.m. game at the Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, New Jersey.
