MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The James Madison women's tennis team brought its fall tournament slate to a close with the final day of the West Virginia University Martha Thorn Invite at the Ridgeview Racquet Club on Saturday.
The Dukes faced opponents from host West Virginia and Akron on the last day of the fall schedule, notching four singles victories on the last day of the tournament.
"On our final day of the fall season, we had some great battles," Head Coach James Brycesaid. "Playing the weekend at less than full strength meant some had to play against tougher competition. This was a good test for them, and I feel like we learned a lot about this team going into the spring season."
Senior Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) and junior Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson) each won their lone singles matches of the afternoon, both battling foes from Akron. Khan rallied for the three-set win (2-6, 6-4, 10-4) over Shannon Newnes while Wirth dropped Maria Bessmertnaya in two sets (6-2, 6-4).
The senior-junior duo paired up for doubles competition against WVU, falling in a tiebreaker (8-7(1)) to Hailey Barrett and Lyn Yuen Choo.
Freshman Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood) posted the lone JMU win against the Mountaineers, battling Ikttesh Chahal for the three-set victory. After falling behind with a 6-4 loss in set one, Owens rattled off straight set wins (6-3, 10-7) to take the come-from-behind victory. Against Akron, Owens fell 6-2, 6-1 to Ariadna Blinova.
Sophomore Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) also went 1-1 in singles action on Saturday, posting a two-set victory (6-3, 6-2) over Akron's Kati Mdzinarishvili and dropping a tight three-set loss (6-4, 2-6, 10-8) to West Virginia's Yvon Martinez.
