FAIRFAX, Va., April 12, 2014 – Junior Jasmine Waddell (Mount Royal, N.J/Kingsway Regional) moved into the James Madison track & field record book in the 400-meter hurdles Saturday as the Dukes competed in the Mason Spring Invitational.
Waddell ran the seventh-fastest time in program history in the hurdles event, finishing 13th out of 38 runners with a time of 1:03.20. She added a top-10 finish in the 100-meter hurdles, taking 10th out of 41 runners.
Senior Kristen Greene (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) competed in two throwing events this weekend, one less than the three she excelled in last weekend at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, and was successful once again with a pair of top-ten finishes. Her toss of 12.89 meters was good enough for fourth out of 30 in the shot put, and she took 10th out of 29 in the discus.
The JMU distance runners were paced by a pair of freshmen in Meghan Malloy (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) and Tessa Mundell (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin). Malloy ran to an 11th-place finish against 34 other runners in the 5,000-merer run, while Mundell was 15th in a large field of 57 runners in the 1,500-meter run.
Freshman Nia Jones (Heathsville, Va./Northumberland) was Madison's lone entry in either of the horizontal jump events. She took 10th out of 32 in the triple jump.
The Dukes' sprinters fared well in large fields in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Freshman Annie Johnson (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led the way by taking 28th out of 61 in the 100 and 32nd out of 72 in the 200. Freshman Deana Forbes (Danville, Va./George Washington) was 30th in the 200.
The Dukes' had multiple entries in the 800-meter run. Freshman Carol Strock (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and junior Morgan Sheaffer (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) topped the group, finishing 27th and 32nd, respectively, out of 69 runners.
JMU will compete at home for the first time this season as it hosts the JMU Invitational Saturday at University Park.
