CHANDLER, Arizona -- The James Madison golf team shot its third straight round of par or better and moved up one spot to finish eighth at the 2015 Wyoming Cowboy Classic, April 6-7. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Wyoming, was played at Whirlwind Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,334 yards) in Chandler, Arizona.
After rounds of 5-under 283 and even-par 288, Madison was able to post a 4-under 284 in the final 18 to finish at 9-under 855 in eighth. McNeese State took home the team title after a 26-under 838, two shots better than Idaho in second at 24-under 840. Colorado placed third at 22-under 842, while Gonzaga at 17-under 847 and UC Savis at 15-under 849 rounded out the top-five teams in the 18-team field.
Sophomore Poom Pattaropong led JMU with a 4-under 68 in the final 18 to move up 10 spots into a tie for sixth at 7-under 209. The 68 in the final round ties his own personal 18 best, while the 54-hole total of 209 and the 7-under score are both career bests. For Pattopong, he now has three top-10 and six top-30 finishes on the season and five top-10 placings in his career. Freshman Jack Floydd tied for 22nd at 3-under 213, shooting a 1-under 71 in the today's round. Senior Jon Weiss and sophomore Ryan Cole tied for 44th at 1-over 217, where Floydd posted his fourth top-25 finish of the year. Senior Trey Smith completed the team scoring as he tied for 77th at 8-over 224.
In a three-way playoff for medalist honors, Weber State's Devon Purser took first, Robert MacIntyre of McNeese State was second and Idaho's Jared du Toit took third as the trio who finished tied at 9-under 207 played No. 18 to start the playoff, where it decided all three slots.
JMU is back on the course in a week, traveling to the Greenbriar Invitational, Mon.-Tue., April 13-14. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at The Old White TPC at the Greenbriar in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
