HARRISONBURG, Va. – On a rainy Friday night at the JMU Field Hockey Complex, No. 19 James Madison field hockey battled to a 4-3 win over Temple.
After JMU (6-2) headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead over Temple (3-6), the scoring started quickly in the second stanza thanks to a deflection by freshman Miranda Rigg off a pass from freshman Sarah Floeter. As the Dukes and Owls traded goals, JMU pushed to a two-goal lead twice more before Temple's Rachael Mueller deflected in a shot at the high left post to pull back within one at 4-3.
With the Dukes up and less than four minutes on the clock, the Owls pulled their goalkeeper in an effort to press the attack. JMU, however, battled through a Temple penalty corner and being down three players to secure the victory.
JMU saw four Dukes score on Friday night, including three off corner plays. Temple, however, earned more corners than Madison at 9-6, including an 8-3 edge in the second half. The Owls also just edged the Dukes in shots at 13-12, though JMU held a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half.
The Dukes return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. against No. 15 ODU at home.
