TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Fresh off of a victory at the Bash at the Beach Invitational earlier this week, the James Madison men's golf team sits atop the team leaderboard at the Par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Course following one round of play at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
As a unit, the Dukes shot a 6-under 282 on the day to secure a two-stroke lead. Junior
Ryan Cole (-3, T-4th) and sophomore
Matt Cowgill (-3, T-4th) both turned in impressive starts to the weekend with nine birdies and only three bogeys between them.
Also managing to shoot under par was junior
Poom Pattaropong (-1, T-12th), who added four birdies of his own.
"Overall, we played great today," said head coach
Jeff Forbes. "We need to clean up a few things this afternoon and get ready to keep things rolling tomorrow."
Jacksonville sits close behind Madison after carding a 4-under 284 in the first round. Three more teams are tied at 3-under, including host Florida State, who enters the weekend ranked as the fourth team in the nation. In total, four teams participating in the tournament rank among the nation's top 50 and six more join them in the top 100, including JMU who sits at number 67.
Also playing for the Dukes are sophomore
Jack Floydd (+1, T-33rd) and freshman
Alex Henderson (+2, T-39th) in the field of 78 golfers.
The Dukes return to the course tomorrow morning for the second round of the 2016 Seminole Intercollegiate.
TERRIFIC TRANSFERSince joining the Dukes from North Texas, Cowgill has impressed. The Weston, Mass. native finished tied for fourth at -9 at the 2016 Loyola Intercollegiate as an individual and made his debut playing for the team at the 35th Annual Bash at the Beach Invitational.
