KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Junior
Ryan Cole carded a 5-under par 66 in the third and final round of the 2016 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate to clinch the individual championship on Sunday.
Cole (-10, 1st) earned his second individual championship of the 2015-16 season, with the first being at the 35th Annual Bash at the Beach Invitational in March, on the strength of six birdies in round three and 15 birdies over the course of the entire weekend. His 66 is the second-best single round of the year, just behind a 7-under par 65 at the Golfweek Program Challenge.
"It was a great victory for Ryan," said head coach
Jeff Forbes. "He played fantastic under difficult conditions and beat some of the best players in the country."
The Mount Airy, Md. native topped the 89-player field to lead the Dukes (290-292-293 - 875) to a seventh-place team finish in a tournament which featured five teams in the nation's top 50. No. 14 Wake Forest took home the team championship after shooting 3-over par on Sunday, passing the Kennesaw State Owls who entered the day atop the leaderboards.
Also competing for James Madison at the Par 71, 7,099-yard Club at Irish Creek was sophomore
Jack Floydd (+10, T-35th), who jumped 11 spots on the final day, while sophomore
Matt Cowgill (+14, T-54th), senior
Chris Kapsak (+16, T-62nd) and redshirt freshman
Shota Ozaki (+18, T-68th) rounded out the scoring.
The Dukes return to the course on Friday, April 22 with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line as they compete in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
