GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seventh-seeded James Madison fell 4-1 to second-seeded College of Charleston in a quarterfinal battle in the Colonial Athletic Association men's tennis tournament.
Due to weather in the area, the match was moved indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center and began with singles action. An opening win at No. 4 singles gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Senior Maxi Branth took down Charlie Ghriskey in two sets (6-4, 6-2) at No. 3 to knot the match at 1-all, representing JMU's lone point of the afternoon.
The Cougars pulled back in front of the Dukes with a come-from-behind win at No. 2 singles (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) before pushing out to a 3-1 lead with a hard-fought, two-set decision (6-4, 7-6(3)).
College of Charleston clinched the match at No. 6 singles, as the second set between Alex Berdnikoff and Garrett Gordon came down to a tiebreak (6-1, 7-6(4)).
