HARRISONBURG, Va. – Multiple school records, a pair of facility records and a slate of qualifiers for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships highlighted a split-squad day of competition for the James Madison track & field team.
Across town at Bridgewater's Jopson Track & Field Invitational, graduate student Amber Monroe led the way with two first-place finishes. She won the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying toss of 16.25 meters (53'3.75") that broke the school record she previously set at 15.64 meters. She also won the discus with a school record throw of 53.99 meters (177'1"), surpassing her previous best of 52.20 meters.
Freshman Dominique Johnson joined Monroe in meeting the ECAC requirement for the discus, sending her throw 43.32 meters (142'1") to take second place. Fellow freshman Sidra Morris placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.99 meters (147'7"), the sixth-longest throw in program history.
All three Dukes surpassed Jopson facility records on Friday afternoon. Monroe shattered the facility's bests in the shot put (12.93 meters) and discus throw (42.18 meters). Morris overcame the previous shot put mark with her own second-place throw of 13.10 meters while Johnson exceeded the previous discus mark.
At the Penn Relays, the 4x100 ECAC Relay team finished in fourth place out of nine teams for the best track finish of the day, crossing the line in a combined 46.52 seconds. The team of sophomore Aereale Scott, junior Kennedy King, junior Annie Johnson and freshman Meredith Willis improved on Friday's prelim time of 47.39 seconds and came just shy of their season-best mark of 46.06, set at the Raleigh Relays.
The same Dukes also took to the track for the 4x200-meter relay heats, placing 18th out of 52 teams, with a time of 1:39.70. Their mark is the seventh-fastest in program history and qualifies them for the finals tomorrow.
Scott, King, Johnson and Willis will close out the 2016 regular season slate with the final heat of the 4x200 ECAC finals on Saturday, April 30.
