FRANKLIN, Tenn. - James Madison men's golf junior
Ryan Cole shot a 3-under 69 in the third and final round of the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional to finish at 14-under and tie for second out of 75 golfers at the Par 72, 7,190-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club on Wednesday. The performance qualifies Cole for the 2016 Division I Men's Golf National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
After a career-best score of 64, including eight birdies and zero bogeys, in Tuesday's second round, Cole faced a little more adversity to start the third round as he shot par on four of the first five holes, but bogied the other hole. He stayed composed throughout, however, and managed to sink four birdies on the day without going over par the rest of the way. Overall, he shot 69-64-69--202 to set a career-low score over 54 holes.
"Ryan was strong to start-to-finish and he represented JMU the right way," said head coach
Jeff Forbes. "I couldn't be more proud of the way he played and carried himself throughout, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does in Oregon."
The Mount Airy, Md. native shared second place with Texas sophomore Doug Ghim and the duo was topped only by Houston's Michael Perras (-16). With the top five teams and the top individual not on one of the advancing teams moving on to Oregon, Cole's competition became Washington's Carl Yuan (-10) once the Huskies were eliminated from team contention at the end of the day.
The teams that qualified for the National Championship out of the Franklin Regional were Texas (-45), Vanderbilt (-34), Houston (-25), LSU (-25) and Virginia (-22).
